The Power of your WHY

Aktualisiert: 10. Apr.

I once heard a man say that when my 'why' becomes more powerful, my 'how' will become more possible. Up until that point, my 'what' was full of imagination. My why? Nowhere to be seen. I wasn't sure why I was doing what I was doing. Once in awhile the 'why' would peek its head in the room but was quickly escorted out by other distractions. It was no wonder I was usually only half driven, only half inspired. Time was flying by and still, my goals and dreams were far from being realized. It was when I started working on my "why" that things began to shift in my life. The "why" to WHAT we are doing brings with it a sense of urgency. It's almost a case of "If you don't do this, no one else will...forever." It's a reminder that adds glory to the pain. Having a "why" in what I do gives me the neccesary push to keep going. To start making sense of all of the movement and commotion. It has never been easy to be clear on my "why" but it is worth the effort, taking the time to identify, define, and refine the reason for the discomfort.  My "why" has shown me how far I'm willing to go to get what I deserve. It has taught me how stop fearing hard work.

I was entertained by a powerful quote which read "What would you attempt to do if you knew you couldn't fail?" Powerful question! I entertained this question quite some time. I even wrote it on a pinboard and went to the shopping district of the city of Cologne Germany and stood there holding this sign. I got many responses. Out of the hundreds of people that walked by, 2 were rude, others ignored, but many came up to me to have a talk. Some took selfies with me. Some praised the action of standing there sparking their curiousity for what is possible. One woman walked by, stopped, read the sign, made a gesture as to really being intrigued with this question, and kept walking. We made no eye contact. But still I thought to myself, "Yes, that is exactly what needed to happen!" Nothing more exciting than to be able to get the human being to think about possibilities!

I went home to California and asked all of my family this very question. "What would you attempt to do if you knew you couldn't fail?" Everything is going to work out, you got the perfect hand, the right doors open, you got all the green lights... what would you attempt to do with your life knowing that you can't fail? The average answer? "I don't know! That was the average answer. So here we are, in our 20's, 30's, 50's and 60's not knowing what it is that really moves us. The things that we really want to strive for, a life well lived. Up until that point, we hadn't made the effort to figure it out.

If in your life, things just didn't work out. It happens. Sometimes life is like that. Maybe it was the weather, maybe the wrong government, or the economy. It happens. Life is like that. But if you didn't do anything in your power to make it happen. You never lifted a finger to get things going, you just never really tried, it's where the story gets a bit sad. But if you never even thought about what it is you wanted in life and after today, you continue to refuse to do so, this is where the story just gets pathetic.

When we refuse to think about us and our possibilities, the things that get us going in life. The ideal and perfect scenarios that would bring us joy and that zest for life, we do ourselves a disservice. We allow the things that we don't want in life to creep in and reside in this vacant territory. There is a part of us that needs to be stimulated by thought and thought alone. If you think about it, everything you see around you right now was once somebody's thought. The shirt you are wearing was once in a designer's mind, the building you are in was once in the mind of the architect. The car, the phone, streets. It all started in someone's mind who did not stop thinking about it, until it came to be. Maybe they had to involve other people, maybe it was painful and frustrating. But, they did not stop. It became a fascinating obsession.

Use your God given imagination. The one you used to use as a child. The imagination that wasn't afraid of being judged and didn't think about the "hows" but about endless possibilities. Go back to that childlike and playful imagination you were born with and for a second, for just one second, imagine what it is you still want to experience while you live on this earth. Where? When? With who? What is the best case scenario? Even if these thoughts scare you, it is important to breakthrough and to welcome these thoughts that maybe frankly you've never made any time and space for. A new relationship will start to build between you and that other you that believes everything is possible. What's there to lose? I encourage you!
